Today we went over continental drift and filled in our notes. We will continue with this page tomorrow so keep it safe! We also completed a density lab to see WHY we have layers and why they are arranged the way they are. HW: Study for a quiz tomorrow! Finish the videos on the previous post by MONDAY along with the questions

Today we discussed pangaea and the evidence that Alfred Wegner had in order to support this theory. We created magnet replicas of this model and used this to make our own model. Each model had plant and fossils on each continent in order to help fit the continents together.
HW: Finish your Pangaea puzzle! Watch the rest of the videos for this unit and have your answers written down on the same piece of paper. The rest of these are due MONDAY 11/13. Study for a quiz on Friday!

Earth Layers Questions
1. If seismic waves are deflecting off in different directions when they hit the inner core, what do you think is different about the inner core? a. It's solid b. It's a gas c. It's a liquid 2. Where is the crust the thinnest? a. Under the ocean b. under the mountains 3. Since both of these types of crust are igneous rocks, how do you think the crust was originally formed? a. by weathering, erosion, and deposition b. by tremendous heat and pressure then it uplifted c. by melting and cooling by volcanoes 4. What's the big difference between the outer core and the inner core? a. The inner core is solid and the outer core is liquid b. the inner core is thicker than the outer core c. the inner core is cooler than the outer core 5. List the layers in order of density and temperature (lowest to highest). a. Crust, core, mantle b. core, mantle, crust c. crust, mantle, core 6. List the layers in order of size (thinnest to thickest) a. mantle, outer core, inner core, crust b. crust, inner core, outer core, mantle c. inner core, crust, outer core, mantle d. crust, outer core, inner core, mantle 7. Which layer can support life? a. inner core b. crust c. outer core d. mantle
Continental Drift Questions
1. What is the name of the theory that involves plates that move on earth's surface? a. Pangaea b. Big Bang Theory c. Continental Drift 2. How could the mesosaurus fossils be found in two different continents? a. Continental drift theory b. ALIENS!!! c. It swam across the ocean 3. What does the law of superposition state? a. The older fossils are at the top of the layers of the earth b. The younger fossils are deeper c. the older fossils are deeper 4. How does fossil evidence support Wegener's hypothesis of continental drift? a. Plants and animal fossils show evidence of changes in Earth's polarity b. Fossil evidence suggests that the continents have always been in their current position c. No similarities exist between fossils on different continents 5. Where is the older crust when looking at a mid ocean ridge? a. Right next to the crack b. Far away from the crack Unit 4 Plate Tectonics from Brittany Dudek on Vimeo.

Which of the following layers makes up the greatest percentage of Earth's mass? a. The Mantle b. Oceanic Crust c. The core d. Continental crust
Follow the directions on your handout FIRST! Once you are done with your 12 questions, check StudentVUE to see if you have any missing work.
Here is the link for the quiz on layers of the earth: http://www.quia.com/rr/977194.html (Make sure you complete the game until you get to $1,000,000 and at least three times) When you are done, you may work on Legends of Learning by going to login.legendsoflearning.com and entering DUDEK as your teacher code. HW: Plate Boundaries video and answer the questions below (Since edpuzzle is still not working, you may view the actual video below). Video 23 Plate Boundaries from Brittany Dudek on Vimeo.
Plate Boundaries Video
1. Continental crust is mostly made of what? a. Basalt b. Granite 2. If a continental plate and an oceanic plate collide, which one would subduct UNDER the other one? a. Continental b. Oceanic 3. If two continental plates collide, what will form? a. Mountains b. Trench 4. If two oceanic plates are moving away from each other, what will happen? a. Rift valley b. sea floor spreading 5. What type of boundary would create earthquakes? a. Convergent b. Divergent c. Transform 6. Sea floor spreading occurs at which of the following types of tectonic plates? a. Divergent b. Convergent c. Transform d. Strike-slip 7. If folded mountain were to form, what type of boundary would have caused it? a. Divergent b. Transform c. Convergent
Today we continued to discuss the layers of the earth. More specifically the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. We watched a quick brainpop and went over any questions we had concerning the earth. We also took a look at the elements that make up the earth's crust and created a bar graph to show this. HW: Continental Drift Edpuzzle (I am working with edpuzzle to get the problem with the videos resolved. Stay tuned! If it is not solved by 5pm today, I will not count this edpuzzle as a grade) UPDATE: Edpuzzle is still working on the videos so the continental drift edpuzzle is NOT for homework. Enjoy your weekend :)
Today we went over the different layers of the Earth. We also completed notes about these layers, and even created a model of the Earth's layers!
HW: Finish your paper plate! Continental Drift edpuzzle is due MONDAY
Today we were able to retake our Unit 3 test if remediation was turned in. We also completed our Unit 4 Vocabulary and tried to fill in an organizational chart about the layers of the Earth. Tomorrow we will be creating our own model of the Earth's layers so bring coloring materials! HW: Finish your Vocab and Chart (see the document below for answers). Do NOT worry about the edpuzzle as majority of us seem to be having issues with this. We will complete this as a class tomorrow.
