Today we went over the continental drift theory! We acted like Alfred Wegner and tried to fit on the continents together for a puzzle. We used this information to make our own puzzle of Pangaea! Today we had a quick demo with cornstarch and water. You can try this at home: wet some corn starch in your hand. Squeeze and apply pressure and you will feel that it turns into a solid! When you let go, it will turn into a liquid. This models what the inner core does since it is solid. We also took our Unit 4 Quiz 1 on the layers of the earth and watched Bill Nye. Today we finished our 'Inside the Earth' notes IN class so we didn't have to do the flipped video tonight (you can watch it below if you would like). We also watched the brainpop for 'Earth's Structure' and took the quiz. We then looked at the composition of Earth's crust and what elements are most prevalent where we live (oxygen, silicon, and aluminum). Today we went over our 'Inside the Earth' notes that we took over the weekend and we also filled in an organizer chart in order organize our thoughts about each layer. We also made a paper plate that was a 2D model of the layers of the Earth. HW: Finish Paper Plate Model

Once you are done you will need to complete a pie graph to turn in at the end of the period, play some review games, then you can get your homework. Today we tested our skills on the rock cycle and soil by filling in a quiz by using our notes. Grades will be updated in the grade book with those grades in it. Some of us definitely need to study! Today we actually took notes in class (imagine that!) We also started on our performance tasks #5 and #7 since they were taught during the lesson today. We also completed a critical thinking assignment that involves soil and the nutrients contained in it. We also got to see the difference in mechanical and chemical weathering and also started watching oxidation take place in the classroom! HW: Watch the Soil Conservation video and finish the notes. Make sure you have no referrals from the past two weeks and purchase a ticket in order to attend. For Fun: Over the weekend, I was invited to go to North Georgia to see the difference in the rocks to find the different zones in Georgia (Like piedmont, coastal plains, etc.) The regions depend on what types of rock that are found in that area. It was the geologists job to find the line where the rocks change. We were able to look at a sample of granite called 'corbin' taken from North Georgia. It is VERY rare because it has blue quartz instead of white or clear. It also has LICHEN on it which is a form of chemical weathering. The pictures are below from the trip :) Today we did a writing activity called "The Pebble in my Pocket." We used our Rock Journey Chart from yesterday to write a story about a pebble that went through the Rock Cycle. This writing assignment counts as a test grade, so for those of you that did not finish it in class, it MUST be turned in on Monday.
